<image:title>Alameda County - Evaluating a Mature Trauma System in California</image:title>
<image:caption>B+A recently completed a year-long trauma system assessment in Alameda County, California. Alameda County has a robust trauma system that began in 1987. Despite significant population growth in the region over the last three decades, the trauma system has not added any trauma centers since its inception. Working side-by-side with the Alameda County EMS Agency and its three trauma centers, B+A conducted a thorough assessment of the current trauma system, made projections about future capacity of the trauma system, and evaluated two hospitals for feasibility and inclusion in the trauma system. The entire process was highly collaborative and data-driven. The final presentation delivered to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors can be found on the Alameda County EMS website. Washington Hospital Healthcare System was selected by Alameda County EMS as the next Level II trauma center in Alameda County. Read the press release or watch the video message.</image:caption>

<image:caption>B+A worked with the recently merged 21 hospital Ballad Health to assess productivity, available resources and consolidate two Level I and one Level II trauma centers into a system of one Level I and two Level III centers. In addition to supporting the trauma centers’ consolidation, B+A assisted in the merger of the two competing air medical systems. <image:title>Trauma Care in South Carolina - Feasibility of Small Rural Hospitals as Level IV Trauma Centers</image:title>
<image:caption>B+A recently worked with the South Carolina Office of Rural Health and several rural hospitals to assess feasibility for becoming Level IV trauma centers in under-served and remote areas of the state. The hospitals are already serving a significant number of injured patients in their Emergency Departments, and a Level IV trauma designation could help formalize infrastructure of the trauma program and recover program costs through the assessment of trauma activation fees. B+A worked with the leadership of several hospitals to understand the challenges of the rural environment, complete a gap analysis of their hospital resources, and provide volume estimates and financial projections. “The unknown has been a significant barrier to welcoming small, rural hospitals into the trauma system. Bishop + Associates facilitated an insightful process which elevated the understanding of trauma centers across our state and will allow new facilities to enter the system with confidence.” — Britton Herbert, South Carolina Office of Rural Health, Health System Innovation Manager</image:caption>

      <image:title>Georgia - Georgia’s Plan for a State-of-the-Art Trauma System</image:title>
<image:caption>In the 2000s, B+A was hired to assess the needs and opportunities for trauma care in the state of Georgia. This was set against a state crisis triggered by the closure of several trauma centers, leaving many Georgians a great distance from high-level trauma care. B+A assisted in designing a cutting-edge trauma system that reflected best practices from across the nation, coupled with the best ideas from Georgia. The result was a state-of-the-art vision for a fully inclusive, integrated statewide trauma and emergency care system. Trauma was considered a public service, and the state assured that all who need a higher level of emergency care would be transported quickly to the closest appropriate facility. Other accomplishments included: Helped the state obtain permanent trauma system funding Determined how the state could fairly disburse the state trauma fund to trauma centers, Emergency Medical Services, and trauma physicians Stabilized and expanded trauma centers Strengthened Emergency Medical Services with focus on rural regions of the state Developed a statewide trauma transfer communications system Strengthened physician support for trauma care in rural Georgia Assisted in initiatives to reduce traumatic injury Integrated the trauma system with disaster/terror preparedness initiatives Developed trauma system regionalization in Georgia Developed a trauma system stakeholder structure Established mechanisms to assure exceptional accountability The project in Georgia led to the publication of a book chapter entitled “The Economics of Regional Trauma Centers - the Georgia Model.” The Georgia team continued to use the B+A methodology and in 2019 published a journal article in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery entitled “How Much Green Does It Take To Be Orange.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>B+A recently completed a trauma system assessment in Santa Barbara County, California. Working side-by-side with the Santa Barbara County EMS Agency, its two trauma centers, and EMS stakeholders, B+A conducted a thorough assessment of the current trauma system and made recommendations for updates to EMS triage criteria to reflect national best practice standards. An executive summary of the full report can be found on the Santa Barbara County EMS website. Revisions to EMS policy were made in collaboration with EMS providers and the trauma destination process was revised shortly after the conclusion of the project.</image:caption>

<image:title>Trauma Center Association of America - Origin of the TCAA</image:title>
<image:caption>The 1991 Trauma Center Economic Study, conducted by Bishop + Associates (B+A) in collaboration with the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, initiated the development of the TCAA. The study produced baseline data for trauma center financial performance and identified the economic challenges faced by trauma centers. B+A then formed the Trauma Resource Network to develop strategies for economic stability and to provide direct support to trauma centers. This included a robust collection of research projects and educational programs delivered to 250 trauma center members of the Trauma Resource Network. Greg Bishop and the Trauma Resource Network successfully proposed trauma response charges to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the 2000s. B+A CEO Greg Bishop then organized a board of national trauma surgery and hospital leaders to form a non-profit association of trauma centers named the National Foundation for Trauma Care (NFTC). In 2004, BA transferred the Trauma Resource Network to the NFTC, later renamed the Trauma Center Association of America.</image:caption>
